4L60E To 4L80E Transmission Performance Swap

If you are tired of your 4L60E transmission breaking all the time because of all the horsepower you have added? We have the answer for you. You can just convert it to a 4L80E transmission and never have a problem again.

You will be able to put as much horsepower as you want without having to worry about if the transmission will hold up or not. In this write up we replaced the 4L60E transmission in a 2006 Supercharged SS Silverado with a new performance built 4L80E.

We begin by upgrading and performance building a 4L80E to hold over 850 Horsepower. All our transmissions are rebuilt in-house so we can control what goes into to them based on the application at hand. We disassembly and clean all existing parts that we will reuse. Then we take all parts and give them a good Cryogenic Processing to relieve stress in the metal and give more added strength.

Next we replaced all clutches, steels, bands, bearings, seals and so on with extreme grade parts. Valve body and front pump are reworked for improve shifting and a new Yank 2800 custom stall converter is used. Our converters are made so we do not have to replace the flywheel to get the transmission to bolt up correctly.

Now that the transmission is all ready to be installed we have to get the truck ready for the new transmission. We need to modify the transmission crossmember and lines as well as rewire the computer to accept the new transmission. We begin with the crossmember. The 4L80E rear mount location is a little longer than the stock 4L60E.

We cut the crossmember and reweld it to match the new mount location as you can see. After that we need to modify the transmission lines to meet up with the new cooler line locations.

Crossmember After Modification

With the cross member and cooler lines redone we can install the new 4L80E in the truck. As you can see she fits like a glove and looks very stock as if it were made to fit. Now that the transmission is in we need to make the computer know what we have.

This takes work and some software reworking. We take programming made for a 4L80E and segment it into the new computer. Now the computer knows what we have. Next we have to rework and add new wiring to the computer because the 4L80E is wired very different. With this all done we can move on to the next step.

In the next step we have to get the power to the rear wheels.  In the SS Silverado the driveshaft needs to be modified to fit. We measure the drive shaft to make sure it is the correct length to fit the 4L80E.the same stock location. We also modify the driveshaft with a new output shaft yoke and performance u-joints.

Now we have it all installed and ready for tuning. We fill the 4L80E with new synthetic fluid and it uses more than the 4L60E uses. In this application we used a cooler tube deep transmission pan because we had no real room for a new transmission cooler. This truck has a supercharger system on it and we are limited on room.

We Dyno tune the truck and change all the transmission settings to meet the new performance this 4L80E gives us.

That's it. The truck is ready for fun and the track. This upgrade is what we like to call a Tank upgrade. It will give you years of worry free performance and you will gain even more power than you had before.
